Teaching Philosophy
It is my belief that all students, no matter what age, can benefit from making
music. Students become well rounded through the multi brain function music requires,
cooperation and team building, sense of individuality as well as belonging, and
emotional expression found in music learning. I firmly believe that all students need to
have each of these parameters of learning within their education. Because music
provides all of these at once, it is an essential subject to study and learn, allowing
students to become well-rounded and intelligent individuals.
Music opens a window to emotions we often do not realize we have. Because of
this, we are able to express ourselves in very important ways. Students need an outlet to
the world around them. Not only does music give students an outlet, it exercises the
brain by allowing students to multitask without even realizing they are doing so. All
students should be able to learn how to work the creative part of their developing
brains.
Not only do students develop their minds in a music classroom, but they
construct a sense of belonging. As students grow, they need to be able to explore the
benefits of working together with people and find where they fit in among different
groups. Music classes allow students to do this by working together to learn music as a
whole ensemble, as well as working in smaller groups and sections. Teamwork and
belonging develops students in invaluable ways.
Students need a place to fit in, but they also need to find their individuality.
Music allows students to find out who they truly are and establish a sense of
individualism. By giving students markers of success and the chance to perform on their
own, students begin to find themselves. Not only this, but students are given the
opportunity to find individual success within ensembles and classes.
While students reap the personal benefits of having success with their art and
finding themselves as an individual among their peers, music also provides intrinsic
benefits. Music gives people (no matter what age) a connection to happiness, and the
ability to do something they truly enjoy. I believe all students should be able to
experience this satisfaction that music can provide throughout their lives. Not only will
students be able to experience this during their school years, they will also be able to
become advocates for this art if they choose to do so. The benefits of music can last a
lifetime for those who wish to pursue it in some form.
Music allows students to be creative, find positive emotions and ways to express
themselves, and encourages important aspects of learning, such as whole-brain
learning, an understanding of cultures all around the world, cooperative learning, and
social benefits. The list of positive aspects music elicits in our schools is endless. For
these and many reasons, music is something I am very passionate about. While music is
not a subject everyone will build their life around, every student should experience
music in some way or another throughout their education.
